North Walsham Rugby Club have a 6 year history of supporting the local community through an outreach program of rugby coaching in local state schools.
Through the 2022/23 season over 2700 hours of coaching was delivered in 33 Norfolk Schools and 135 dedicated coaching days at Scottow park.
Demand for the program continues to grow with several primary, secondary, college and University institutions enquiring about extended rugby provision.
The program is now strong enough to require full time coaching resources, program administration and investment into continuous professional development of rugby coaches and school staff. Long term partnerships are in place with the Wensum Trust, Easton College, The University of East Anglia and a number of ‘Viking’ schools in the region.
‘The Viking Foundation’ is a Norfolk-based charity with the purpose of improving rugby coaching & playing standards and broadening playing participation.
The foundation has 3 objectives:
- To supply qualified rugby coaching into local Norfolk state schools and host multi-school participation events.
- To support students through higher education via a bursary programme in partnership with the University of East Anglia.
- To invest in improving facilities to provide sports coaching at Scottow Park.
The trustees of the charity are tasked with attracting investment to deliver the objectives of the foundation, and allocate resources in line with these objectives.
The Foundation will launch on 24th November 2023 supported by a fund-raising lunch event hosted by the Trustees and partners from the UEA at the Oaklands Hotel in Norwich.
Guests at the launch event will hear more about the programme’s objectives from trustees, education partner’s, as well as from recent bursary recipients.
A number of fund-raising activities are planned including an opportunity to pledge support for school coaching hours and further education bursaries.
