The Club are pleased to announce the appointment of Niall Lear as their new
Director of Rugby. A level 4 Coach, the 40 year old Glaswegian will join us in July
when he leaves a teaching post in West Sussex where he has been working since
his return to the UK last year from the United Arab Emirates. In the UAE he was Director of Rugby at Abu Dhabi Harlequins for three years, responsible for managing the operations and coaching of a Club with 1,200 players. Harlequins are one of seven semi-professional teams with players from across the world that compete in the UAE Premiership which they won in Niall’s final season. Prior to that, he’d been Head Coach at then Scottish National 1 Falkirk for three years, before moving on to Premiership side Currie.
As a player he played for Scotland under 18s, whilst his Clubs included Loughborough University (where he did his degree in Sports & Exercise Science), Glasgow Hawks and Rosslyn Park; at the latter, he recalls being in a side “well beaten by the Vikings.”
Alongside coaching, Niall has had a progressive career in education too. A PE Teacher with MScs in Sport Performance Management and Sport & Leisure Management, he worked for more than a decade in Schools in Scotland, most recently Merchiston Castle, one of the country’s strongest rugby Schools, where he had pastoral care responsibilities alongside teaching and rugby.
