Match Report – Worthing Vs Vikings 27.4.24

Vikings fall to heavy defeat at Worthing

The Vikings made the long trip to Worthing to return a defeated, but not disheartened,  71-19.  This was their last match of the season.  It was also their last in tier 4 National 2 East after 2 years.  Finishing 14th they will be relegated to tier 5 when next season starts.

With both sides wanting to finish the season with attractive rugby the game started briskly.  Worthing had very fast and strong backs, putting them to the forefront immediately.  Thus Worthing soon got their first try in the 2nd minute via wing forward Oliver Crow.

This was followed by four further first half tries without reply on 15, 20, 24, and 32 minutes.  Three of Worthing’s five first half tries were converted to make it 31-0 to Worthing at half time.

During this first period the Vikings forwards were doing well in the scrum and lineout.  Breaks from their own 22 by backs Dan Smith and Tawanda Kandemwa eased the pressure somewhat.  However, lost ball and interceptions allowed the impressive Worthing backs to score freely.

Into the second half Worthing continued to score freely and frequently.  Adding six more tries and five more conversions before the end.

This half the Vikings response was three tries, two converted.

The first two tries came from line breaks on halfway by Harry Dye and Dan Smith respectively.  Both were finished off by the ever-Connor Dudley.  Both were also converted by Director of Rugby Niall Lear’s Lacons Brewery man of the match Jamie Hooker.  Niall said “Jamie gave a very controlled performance on his first Vikings’  start at 10.”

The third try followed several forward drives and a well-crafted Jamie Hooker cross kick for Matt Austin to score.

At the end Lear said “We were beaten by a well drilled Worthing whose outside backs caused us problems all day.  As a squad 1-20 they played a quick brand of rugby we couldn’t live with, offloading late and deep through the line.

We stuck at it and got back into the game but ultimately we were outgunned and outplayed”

It was, overall, a reasonable performance against a Worthing team whose performance belied their low, 12th, league position.

The match was attended by the NWRFC Home Straight golfing society who held their traditional end of season competition nearby.  At the end of the match they formed a tunnel and applauded our players off the pitch until we see them again in next season’s pre-season.
