Match Report – Vikings Vs. Barnes – 30th September, 2023

North Walsham Vikings 0 Barnes 36

The Vikings tough start to the season continued as the National 2 East league side hosted Barnes at Scottow Park.   This was the Vikings 5th game of the season and the 5th consecutive fixture against sides who finished last season in the top 6 of the league.

The game started ominously as the well drilled Barnes pack scored 2 early tries from line out mauls.  Popular home favourite, Ethan ‘Doc’ Sikorski returned to Scottow following a move to London.  He scored for Barnes in a fashion that the home crowd were more used to seeing from him in the green and black of Walsham last season.

Despite some challenges securing their own line out ball the Vikings started to settle into the game.  Encouragingly the home scrum got on top but despite dominating 30 minutes of territory and possession, Walsham couldn’t find the cutting edge needed to penetrate the Barns defence and the 1st half finished 0-12.

3mins after the restart Barnes again exerted their line out dominance to score a 3rd mauling try that gave them significant scoreboard pressure.  In an effort to chase the game the Vikings tried to speed up their play.  Scrum half Connor Dudley led with a series of quick penalties and running play from inside their own 22 line.  Turnover ball gifted Barnes their bonus point try and their defence held up well to hold on to a clean sheet. Two more 2nd half tries, including a 4th from their impressive line out.

“A much improved performance from our young side,” said Director of Rugby Niall Lear. “I was pleased with the 1st 60minutes, particularly in the scrum, we will get back into training this week and work hard on taking the next step forward.”

Prop Tim Weber put in a huge 80 minute performance up front and was declared Lacons Brewery player of the match.  Next week the squad travel away to Sevenoaks to try and gets their 1st points of the season.

Some great running rugby played at tremendous pace. Good accurate passing and off-loading. The boys are to be congratulated for the way they stuck to the task to the final whistle and never let their heads drop.
The rewards will come – and could be in the next game . Well done
